Building your own shed is not as difficult as you may think it is. If you have some basic carpentry skills it is a project that you can complete in a couple of weekends at the most. A little help from friends and relatives can go a long way and turn it into a fun event. To build your shed and manage the project you will, ideally, need some plans. Choosing the size and look of your shed is an important decision, not only for it's suitability for use but also for the location that it is going to be sited. Some sheds are basic whilst others are more aesthetically pleasing which means you may want to tuck one away while show the more pleasing one to a better advantage to blend in with the landscape yet allow easy access for utilities and even repairs.
Sheds are a fairly simple construction and having looked at the plans you will quickly see the type of layout and look you like and a list of likely materials. Once you see the plans you will realise how simple they are when they are broken down into their constituent parts, most of which can be pre-cut to lengths prior to assembly. Don't be too hasty in deciding where the Shed will go - walk around the proposed site, take measurements and photographs to make sure you site it appropriately. Have a word with neighbours and see if they have any objections to its siting as well - you may as well keep them on your side! Having chosen the location there's not much to do as regards groundwork - a good footing is essential and a base of 4" to 6" of gravel will be more than adequate to provide drainage and keep moisture to a minimum. Having done all that the next step is to go ahead and get the plans - study them well, check all materials that you will need and their availability, including any specialised tools you may require. Order and check all the materials and then it's best to do as much of the cutting of the major components first, it's easier and quicker and will allow you to get the skeleton of the shed assembled and then you can make further checks and test as to what is needed. Then its just a matter of working away following the plans
